TIPS FOR BEST CARE IN
NURSING HOME
1. Visit,
Visit Often, Visit at different times of the day,
and Visit at odd hours.
2.
Look at the
Department of Health, Licensing and Certification
Division Records on the facility (click
here for a list of their Offices in California)
3. Be
nice and polite to the Staff but persistent in
your need to get information and get the care for
your loved one.
4.
Voice your concerns to the Nurse Supervisor on
the Shift. Then to the Director of Nurses. Then
to the Administrator.
5. Put
your concerns in writing to the Director of
Nursing and to the Administrator of the Nursing
Home.
6.
Inform the Department of Health of the problem
and request an investigation. List

7.
Choose the Nursing Home doctor carefully and
develop a good rapport with him or her.
8.
Make certain you have a valid and carefully
drafted Power of Attorney for Health Care/Advance
Directive. Advance Health Care Directives.
9.
Know your rights. There are a number of sources
for the laws regarding nursing homes, including
the admission agreement, arbitration agreements
(refuse to sign arbitration agreements in nursing
homes), visiting, protection of property. Click

10. Review the Patients records frequently.
